Music Awards

Bexley Grammar School has been awarded the Music Mark by the UK Association for Music Education

in recognition of its commitment to providing a high-quality music education for all children and young people. See the certificate below.

Bexley Grammar School was awarded the ISM Trust’s Bronze Certificate 2018.

This means that more than 10% of all the school’s GCSE students achieved an A* to C in GCSE music in 2017, putting us in the top 500 schools in England.

In its third year, the ISM/ISM Trust GCSE certificates recognise schools’ achievement in music and celebrate their commitment to music education shown by the high uptake and achievement of their pupils.

Steve Elphick, Headteacher, was delighted to receive the award. "Music is integral to the life of BGS; the remarkable co-curricular provision in music which starts with a Year 7 concert only weeks into the school year and continues with multiple high-quality concerts and recitals throughout the year, drives a passion for music in so many students. One of the top three most competitive House events during the school year is our House Music competition. To have more than one in ten students in Year 11 succeed in music GCSE is a tribute to an extremely strong department and the commitment of the school to promote music against a backdrop of school funding cuts."

Deborah Annetts, Chief Executive of the ISM – the professional body for musicians – congratulated the school, and said:

‘Music is a valuable subject, it brings value in itself to pupils as well as supporting achievement in other subjects. Music also opens doors and generates educational opportunities for pupils from all backgrounds. We are delighted that Bexley Grammar School values music within its school curriculum and as the professional body for musicians and a subject association for music education, we are delighted to recognise this high level of achievement with this certificate.’
