STEM Summer Update 2025

Primary Science Enrichment Programme

For the last four weeks, three teams of science leaders in Year 12 have been visiting three local primary schools to deliver science clubs. I have been so impressed with their enthusiasm and engagement in this project.

Ms Lusted, Stem Coordinator

Here are a couple of their reflections:

Over the last 4 weeks, I helped out at the primary school science club with my fellow science leaders. We visited 3 different schools with the aim of doing some cool science. In the Year 5s and 6s, we built fruit batteries, mixed up bath bombs, did chromatography with skittles, and made our ice cream/ milkshake/ just milk with sprinkles! Highlights include watching them feed Andy salty ice milk, and also Viktors trying to explain fractional distillation to the year 6s. Overall, it was a really fun experience, and I'd be glad to do it again.

Yu Qi Ong, Year 12

Every Tuesday after school for 4 weeks, a few other Science Leaders and I had the opportunity to attend Danson Primary School to host a science club! Each session was highly interactive and exciting, with the Year 5 scientists participating in science quizzes related to the practical they were doing that week.

In the first week, the mini-scientists were able to make a fruit into a battery and found the best combination of metal electrodes to produce the highest voltage. The second week, they made colourful bath bombs using information from neutralisation reactions. The third week was my personal favourite as we analysed the colours in the dye of skittles using chromatography. The chromatogram that was produced worked really well and was extremely beautiful for most of the skittles. The fourth week was the most popular and messy one of all, one that matched the hot weather perfectly: making ice cream!

I really enjoyed my time helping out at the science clubs, as did many of my other Science Leaders, because it not only helped to share the fun side of science, but it also helped our ability to explain potentially confusing topics into easier-to-understand pieces. If this is an opportunity that is provided, I would advise you to absolutely completely!
