Culture Week 2025

Culture Week was nothing short of spectacular!

It brought students together to experience traditions, food, and performances from around the world; a clear celebration of the diversity at Bexley Grammar. From hands-on activities like decoration-making to the KS3 Culture Fair, each day was packed with excitement. The week culminated in the grand Friday event, where I had the honour of being an MC, giving me the privilege to witness first-hand the incredible talent and effort that went into making this celebration a success.

During the week, our three cultural societies held various events to bring hype for the Culture Day Celebration on Friday. The first was decoration making, where bunting of different flags and lanterns were made to be hung around the school. The KS4 Language Leaders also held a cheese tasting session and participated in some balli latino-americani. The KS3 Language Leader’s Culture Fayre allowed students to showcase their heritage with pride to their peers. These events would not have been possible without the help of various teachers, so a big thank you to all involved!

The week came to a climax on Friday, when both teachers and students donned cultural wear from various parts of the world, as we came together to celebrate our heritage. After school came the long-awaited Culture Day Celebration, where incredible performances were given and delicious food served. As MC of the event with Sebastien, we both got to witness the joy on the faces of the hundreds of students and teachers in the crowd - an experience I am eternally grateful for. Seeing the culmination of the efforts of so many students to create such a positive atmosphere made me proud to be a member of BGS. A special shout out to the dancers from SEAS, BEES and ACS - you were all phenomenal!

Finally, none of this would have been possible without the dedication of the countless Year 12s and 13s who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. From organising events to setting up decorations, your hard work made this week genuinely unforgettable. Thank you all so much! I hope to see even more of you participating next year - let’s make Culture Week 2026 even more incredible!

Jesse Oshogwe, Year 12

Culture Day 2025 has got to be one of the best culture days I’ve ever had. I loved how involved everyone was with the idea of planning and the rehearsal slot we had. I loved SEAS, BEES and ACS dances - they were all so creative and unique.  The heads of each society really put a lot of effort and patience into making all this so successful, as well as all those who made the day special. My favourite part was when all societies did a final dance which I had the pleasure of taking part in. For me, that showed a sense of unity and embracement of one another’s culture. It was genuinely really nice to see everyone dressed in traditional cultural clothing and I really hope next year’s culture day will be bigger and better.

Tiwa Kale, Year 12

Culture Day 2025 was such a success! Being able to participate in the BEES dance this year was such an amazing way to be able to embrace my culture on Culture Day. Whilst choreographing the dance, we aimed to include many aspects of Balkan and Eastern European culture. After our many rehearsals, the day finally came. Each society performed their own dance, and we combined our cultures to perform a total group dance together at the end. ACS, BEES and SEAS all performed a mixture of our dances, and being able to dance in the style of another culture was so much fun!

Throughout the day, being dressed up in cultural wear, and seeing many other people dressed up, was an amazing way to see the range of multiculturalism at BGS! Especially being in the Fashion Parade, representing Bulgaria, I loved seeing everyone waving their own country’s flag.

Can’t wait for next year’s event!
