Mental health awareness week (12th–18th May)

This year’s MHAW at Bexley Grammar School was all about Community and what a powerful theme it turned out to be!

The week began with the MHAW Support Challenge and a wonderfully uplifting Staff Coffee Morning, thoughtfully organised by Mrs. Meyer. Over coffee, laughter, and shared wellbeing tips, staff embraced the idea of connecting with like-minded people. Mrs. Meyer reminded us that "good is good enough", a timely message about self-compassion. Mr. Male, Mr. Cowlard, and Mrs. Snelling offered practical wellbeing advice on movement, mood, and sleep.

As the week unfolded, that sense of community continued to grow! A few staff members from the science department gathered for an outdoor lunch, inspiring others to join and take well-earned breaks in the sunshine. Thursday was ‘Wear Green Day’ and our “Fun Lunch,” which brought students and staff together in appreciation of our school community. Even in chilly weather, our school spirit brought warmth. The frisbee games were such a surprise hit that “Frisbee Fridays” might just become a new BGS tradition!

Meanwhile, the Business and Economics department took part in their weekly Wellbeing Walk, enjoying fresh air and connecting with one another in the beautiful surroundings of Danson Park. As Mrs. Harris put it, “We're so lucky to have this amazing space next door to us!”

In addition, the Psychology Prefects organised a fantastic bake sale to raise awareness of mental health. Selling a variety of delicious home-baked goods, students raised an incredible £103, with all proceeds going to the Bexley Moorings Project, a local charity supporting vulnerable youths in the Bexley borough. It was a wonderful example of students coming together to make a meaningful difference.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who took part. Our community truly shone this week.
