Year 9 Independent Learning Project

The Independent Learning Project (ILP) was an opportunity for the Year 9s to pursue a topic they are passionate about, beyond the curriculum.
It represented creativity and independence; core values of both BGS and the IB programme. The ILP gave me the chance to explore ideas that fascinated me, beyond the limits of the classroom. I researched societal attitudes towards racism overtime in the United States, using evidence and experiences to compare the distribution throughout centuries. Throughout this process, I found myself genuinely excited to dive into research and express ideas in my own voice. I enjoyed having the freedom to shape my learning, take risks and present my work creatively. The ILP helped me grow as an independent learner, and I was able to refine my ability to plan and manage a project and evaluate my progress. The ILP was more than a school task; it was a chance to explore, question and create. And I loved every part of it!

The ILP is a project that you complete over the course of year 9 that encourages students to research and present information about any chosen topic in any way they would like. For my ILP, I researched and created a booklet on the disappearance of the MH370 plane and the theories surrounding it. I thoroughly enjoyed the ILP because it allowed me the freedom to learn more about a topic outside academic subjects and share it with others. I think that the ILP is a great opportunity to showcase your interests, and it links directly to the IB learner profile values, particularly embodying being inquisitive, open-minded and reflective. My advice to future students completing their ILP would be first to choose something that you really have a passion for; ideally, something unique that you wouldn’t learn in your school subject lessons, and also to manage your time well and don't leave it until the last minute!
