Students Celebrate the Chinese
If there is a Chinese celebration near one of our Chinese lessons our teacher, Miss Lu, will often arrange for a fun activity during the lesson. On October the 4th we celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋节!

Today was very different from anything we have done so far at BGS. Pens and others writing materials were banned from all lessons! The day was all about talking rather than writing. We started off with Computer Science and we used ‘Scratch’ to create an awesome racing game. Next we had our Science lesson. Usually in Science we would be drawing graphs of previous experiments, but today we couldn’t do this. The teachers chose the best bits out of our text books and we read them and shared the information with the rest of the class. Some people found hilarious ways of explaining their topic.
On Tuesday 26th September, Bexley Grammar School celebrated foreign languages and cultures as part of
International Day. Students and staff alike represented a host of different countries by wearing international dress, whilst Years 7-10 enjoyed a variety of special lessons put on for the day. A massive thank you to all staff involved for putting on such varied and interesting lessons, and well done to do all students for embracing internationalism so wholeheartedly.
What did you do on Thursday 21st September?
Yesterday I went along to the Fresher’s Fayre. The Fayre is an opportunity to find out about different clubs that go on around the school.
191 Year 11 Bexley Grammar School students have been celebrating an outstanding set of GCSE results which now include the new 9-1 grading for the more challenging, “reformed” English Language, English Literature and mathematics GCSEs. Comparisons cannot reliably be made with previous years because of these reformed qualifications but we should particularly celebrate a remarkable 63% of those English and maths grades which were achieved at 9-7 (equivalent to A*/A), higher than recent years in the old specifications! Across all subjects 58% of grades were A*/A or equivalent. These are tremendous achievements which more than measure up to previous years despite the rigorous new specifications.
Many congratulations to our IB students for their truly outstanding examination results which were released on 6th July.
Spamalot is based on the traditional legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table and is described as being “lovingly ripped off” from the classic film comedy ‘MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL’. It has a brilliant script, impeccably crafted songs in a wide variety of styles, a large band, great harmonies, physical comedy, large dance numbers and the opportunity to involve a wide range of people. We wanted to ensure we retained the humour of the British institution of Monty Python, alongside making the production relevant and appropriate for our students, and we thought long and hard about how to incorporate the themes and songs in the show.
The Arkwright Scholarship prize is one of the most prestigious ones out there for Secondary School children. Over 1500 pupils apply in the UK and with around 400 places for students from 900+ schools competition for places is tough. I have real pleasure in announcing our first ever Arkwright student. We are really proud to announce Mark Hawes was successful after a rigorous process of application, exam and interview. He will receive a generous bursary and support from a leading engineer during his studies up to university. Below is Mark’s response in his own words
On Saturday the 24th June, I competed in the Nihongo Cup Speech Competition organized by Japan Foundation, in Holborn.
On Friday 8th July 2016 Bexley Improv Group performed at the National Festival of Music for Youth finals in Birmingham. Following our performance and recommendation from international jazz pianist Zoe Rahman, we were delighted to be awarded a National Partnership Scheme with the Leeds College of Music. This is the highest musical award that the school has ever won.
As Year 9 and some Year 10 students jetted off to sunny climes after the success of the Summer Fayre, at BGS our annual Enrichment Week 2017 was also blessed with the summer sunshine. Lessons through the week were taught in double slots, allowing departments the flexibility and freedom to deliver sessions which deepen students’ understanding and extend their experience beyond the curriculum.
A huge thank you to the Parents' Association and all the members of our community who made the Summer Fayre such a success.
