Rico Coombs Year 10 Poetry Workshop

English Department ~ Year 10, Poetry Workshop

On Tuesday 5th May, several creative writers from the Year 10 cohort participated in a poetry workshop, run by the acclaimed London poet, Rico Coombs.

With a friendly ease of style, personal voice and positive presence, Rico introduced the students to some of his exciting, modern poems; discussed ideas around emotions; then, linked these emotions with seasons as a backdrop for their own poems.

The enthusiasm and engagement from the students was excellent and the feedback to Rico very positive.

Thank you to all those who joined the experience.

Some snippets of the poems:

The first shower arrives
And with it, the time of our lives
The first daffodil
Gentle, but blooming
Our friendship looming
Like a daffodil at its prime
The key bonds forming
Energy released
Our friendship blooming,
This beautiful daffodil looming.

Snowflake

There could be snow
There could be rain
I don’t know
There could be foes
There could be woes
And I still don’t know

The cold’s heavy breath follows me outside
Clouds my path, and I just can’t hide.
My bones trembly like frosty branches
Clattering and chattering
Like the thoughts in my mind
I yearn for the strength that I just can’t find.

The sun rises and it catches in your hair
Dazzling and glowing adn sunkissed in love
Strawberry stains on a sundress and napkins,
You’ll never leave. This is forever.
The summer is long
But our love is longer,
If only I knew.

The autumn breeze flows through her hair,
As a tear drops from the eye that stares
A crimson leaf leaves the tree bare
And I walk away with my despair.

The new man, tall and full of glee
Everything that I couldn’t be
Everything we could have been
Is washed away in the wind.
As I fall from the tower
And the clock strikes the hour,
The autumn breeze
