Year 9 & 10 Japanese Sumo Trip at the Royal Albert Hall

On the 17th October the Year 9 Japanese class accompanied by some Year 10s made our way to Royal Albert Hall to watch the Schools’ Sumo Presentation.

It was an event being held for schools while the Grand Sumo tournament was being held in London.

When we arrived we were lucky enough to have lunch outside the venue, in Hyde Park as the weather was great. When the event started we were introduced to the hosts including Hiro Morita (presenter for Sumo Prime Time). We were taken through the history of Sumo Wrestling and how it has changed over time and as well as the rules of Sumo Wrestling such as: if any part of your body comes into contact other than your feet, you would lose or if you go outside the ring.

There were 4 very experienced Sumo Wrestlers with one in the Yokozuna rank (highest rank in Sumo Wrestling) showcasing their training and their flexibility. We also got to see a few matches with the Sumo wrestlers going in rounds against each other.

Near the end students also went up against sumo wrestlers with even 5 children against 1 Sumo Wrestler, bringing the wrestler down!

At the end there was a Q and A session with the wrestlers where we got to find out their routines and even diet.  It was very interesting to find out about the Sumo Wrestlers' lives and overall I found the trip fantastic and enjoyable.

Aarush Upadhye, Year 9

I had a very special opportunity to watch Sumo. It was a very rare chance to witness Sumo Wrestling. It was amazing to see how the Sumo wrestlers were so flexible at such a large size! The trip in general was really good and the hosts were interactive with the audience which was great to see.

 Aaruun Kamara, Year 9

I think we were all very lucky to have experienced such an interesting and amazing event. I’m very glad I got to go and the whole trip was extremely entertaining.
