National School Sports Week 2025 ~ Part 1

Week beginning 16th June 2025

We are excited to celebrate National School Sports Week 2025, a fantastic opportunity to highlight the importance of physical activity, teamwork, and overall well-being across our school community. Throughout the week, students will take part in a wide variety of fun and inclusive sporting activities designed to inspire, motivate and get all pupils moving! This year, we’re also placing a special focus on cricket to tie in with ‘Chance to Shine’s Cricket Week’, giving pupils the chance to develop their skills, learn more about the game, and enjoy friendly competition. It promises to be a week full of energy, enjoyment, and school spirit!

Interschool competition Year 8 Girls' Cricket v Blackheath on Monday evening in the glorious sunshine. Unfortunately, losing a few wickets along the way, but a great experience against a strong team.

Year 8 Cricket & Tennis
A brilliant result for our Year 8 cricket team on Monday.  We beat Beths by scoring 182/1 with Suchet hitting an unbeaten 50 runs.  Beths were all out for 101 in the final over of the match.

Well done to the pupils above who won their PE class competitions in either tennis or cricket this week.

IB Sport Science investigations were also taking place alongside our events during the week.

Year 7 Cricket

The Year 7 cricketers took on a strong Beths side in the North Kent League today.  Narrowly losing but learning lots of new skills along the way.  The team is really showing a lot of promise and we are improving every game.

Wednesday

St. John’s Nursery Sports Day
Two of our fabulous sports leaders, Bay and Valentino, supported St. John's Nursery Sports Day on Wednesday. They worked with children aged 2-5years, helping with races and encouraging the teams. They were a credit to BGS.

Thank you both!

Year 9 Girls' Cricket v Blackheath
A glorious evening for cricket. Our Year 9s took on Blackheath High on Wednesday. With some excellent batting and bowling on display, both teams were quite evenly matched throughout the game. Blackheath showed real talent in their bowling, eventually winning the game by 21 runs. Shriya was named as player of the match by the opposition for her leadership and excellent bowling.

Well done to all involved!

To support cricket week, the Year 9 boys were working on their scoring during curriculum time. The highest runs scored during the week was 249.

Year 8 Cricket v CSGS
The BGS Year 8 side beat Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar on Thursday with a very convincing performance.  CSGS batted first and scored a total of 99/8 off their 20 overs.  BGS got there with a few overs to spare for 1 wicket.  Areeb retired unbeaten on 30 runs. It was a fantastic week of cricket with this bunch of pupils who represented the school superbly!

Friday

Sports Awards
We recently held a wonderful event to celebrate the successes of our students and teams throughout the year. It was fantastic to recognise winners from all year groups, celebrating not only academic and sporting achievements, but also the dedication and commitment shown by so many.

This year marked the introduction of our new 'Colours' system. This is a fantastic way to acknowledge sustained contribution and excellence in sport. Year 8 students are eligible to earn Half Colours, while our Year 10 students have the opportunity to gain Full or even Gold Colours. These prestigious awards are based on key criteria including commitment to training and fixtures, leadership, sportsmanship, and performance.

We are incredibly proud of all the students who have achieved these accolades and demonstrated such outstanding dedication throughout the year.

Well done to everyone who was recognised. We look forward to seeing what next year brings!

With the gorgeous weather, we have our rescheduled sports day to look forward to on Friday 27th June too!

Year 7 Cricket
Our final activity from NSSW 2025 saw our Year 7 cricketers pick up their first win of the season against Cleeve Park on Friday afternoon.

Well done to them for their perseverance and hard work!
