The Year 10 rugby team lost a thriller to Bexleyheath Academy 24-22 last week, in a game characterised by some awesome tackling on both sides. Sometimes you just get beaten in sport. Fair play to BA.We’ll be back!

The Year 8 rugby team spent the afternoon in the mud at St Olave’s on Monday, playing 3 other schools. Lots of good performances, but defeats in the end.Kevin did well to score 4 tries!

It was a pleasure to take our cross-country runners to Chis & Sid for the borough championships on Friday afternoon.

Bexley Grammar 3-3 Cleeve Park
The Year 7s braved the cold rain to earn a well-earned 3-3 draw against Cleeve Park, equalising in dramatic fashion from the penalty spot in the dying moments of the game. Onyi was a stand-out figure, scoring a hatrick and using his pace to cause havoc in their defence. The team played with positivity despite losing a half-time lead, and pushed hard as the balance repeatedly changed. Despite conceding 3 goals, the defensive line worked hard, with Neev making some good interceptions, helping recycle the ball and start counter-attacks. Pavel made a number of excellent saves, managing to bravely stop a goal-bound shot with his face; the forwards working hard to hold the ball and turn their opponents.
Overall, whilst the team did not win, they picked up a valuable point, and improved as a unit, making progress and developing a better understanding of their roles. As the season progresses, the team will build on this performance, drawing character from their late equaliser. Harry Baldwin, Year 7
BGS v Cleeve Park
An amazing performance by the Year 8 football team against Cleeve Park last week. The game finished 9-0, and it was a real squad performance with everybody contributing and being selfless to their teammates!!
There were some incredible goals scored, so it was a shame the Match of the Day cameras were not around to record them.
The Year 8 football team also had a game on Monday this week, away to Harris Falconwood. Once again, the players demonstrated a real team ethos and worked extremely hard. BGS conceded a goal early on in the match but went on to win 6-3. Just the casual fifteen (15) goals scored across the last couple of games.
Another strong battling performance, this time in cold, windy conditions. We're very proud of all the players involved. Well done!

Girls Badminton
Great to see the girls in action against Dartford Grammar for the sport they love to play. The girls smashed it this evening - BGS were overall winners in the Key stage 4 competition with the Year 9s Shriya and Kimran winning all the games in the Year 9 competition. A fantastic collaborative team effort with superb sportsmanship - well done!

Swimming
Our senior swim team had a superb gala at Colfe’s on Tuesday. The girls finished 3rd, whilst the boys finished as winners. The combined team finished 2nd overall. There were some fantastic performances, with BGS winning 15 of the 35 races.

Year 7 Netball v St Catherine's
With a win and a loss (by just 2 goals) this evening for the Year 7s. Over 30 different girls have now represented the school in netball so far this season. Impressive work! Improvements are being shown week after week - determination and commitment at its best!
Players of the match went to Amayah for her defensive skills and Shuvi for superb footwork and spacing around the centre court. We have our Christmas tournament to look forward to in a few weeks' time.

Our first and second netball teams played Gravesend Grammar Sixth Form on Wednesday. With a mix of Years 10-13 gracing the court, the teams had to adapt to lots of new combinations. The first team had a hard fought game, but managed to pull away in the last quarter, winning 26-20. Ayaka was voted as player of the match for her dynamic play and feeds into the shooters. Our second team managed to secure a 13-4 win and grew in confidence as the game progressed. Caitlin was voted as player of the match for her great work in attack.
A fantastic afternoon of netball! Well done all.

Year 7 Football ~ North Kent Cup
Year 7 played against Harris Falconwood in the North Kent Cup on Wednesday. It was a tough match, but I think the boys did their best against a good team. Harris worked well together and were a very good team. Although at times it seemed impossible, Bexley encouraged each other to keep their heads up and play to the whistle.
We caused many problems for the other team and Jayden scored a good goal in the second half after good team play, but unfortunately we couldn’t triumph over them as Harris was too strong. It was a great match and the boys will remember it as a brilliant display of skill and talent.Neev Chaganti, Year 7
Year 7 Rugby
The Year 7 rugby team played really well after a slow start against Hurstmere. After conceding 4 early tries, the boys scored some nice tries themselves in a game that finished 30-15 to Hurstmere.

Girls Football Years 8 & 9
A friendly football game against HACA went 1-0 down at half-time because of a penalty. Hazel’s powerful strike at goal clinched a draw in the second half after dominating the game. A good, even balanced game with the Player of the Match going to Vania Obele.
Girls Football Year 7
At the same time, the Year 7s were in action for their first away game. The first half remained goalless, but there were plenty of targets at the goal. We had superb defending with our Year 7s securing their first win of the season - Patricia assisting Neji’s strike on goal in the last 5 minutes. Excellent display of sportsmanship. Published 23/10/24Year 7 RugbyThe year 7 rugby team had their first game, and their first win, on Wednesday, beating Bexleyheath Academy 25-15. The boys showed lots of promise, and have lots of things to work on for their next games.

Year 7 netball - a round up of the term!
A busy term with the Year 7 netballers, experiencing fixtures against other schools whilst learning the game. With well-attended weekly training sessions, fantastic commitment from the students and more games to look forward to next term.
Good home crowd support and great help from the Year 9 girls working towards their CAS hours.
Year 7 v Trinity
The Year 7 v Trinity match followed after training, narrowly avoiding a downpour! With another two teams in action, learning the rules of the game and watching their confidence grow. It's lovely to see excellent sportsmanship from both teams.Players of this term go to Ziva and Amayah for their superb defensive skills in the semicircle as GK and GD. This must be a Bexley Grammar School record with these superstars representing the U14 Bexley Football District. An impressive and talented squad, I was lucky enough to catch the team in action at the weekend.
Well done to: Aris, Jack M, Jack B, Ethan, Seb M, Seb S, Daniel and Samraat. Unfortunately, Yannis and Josh were unable to play. A busy weekend of football for these boys! Congratulations to everyone.

Published 21/10/24As the first term comes to a close, it’s a thank you and goodbye to our BGS Sports Prefects who have been an incredible support to the PE department this past year. Their enthusiasm and dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. They have been outstanding role models, showing leadership and commitment in every task undertaken. We feel now is the time for a handover so they can concentrate on their studies. To show our appreciation, each prefect was gifted a parting ‘reading book’ gift.We hope this small gesture will continue to inspire them. Enjoy reading, and we wish you the very best of luck in your final terms at BGS.

A disappointing start meant a 0-4 defeat in their first game, but the boys hope to bounce back later in the tournament. You can follow the tournament on YouTube here.Fantastic to see our former students representing their country.

The Year 11s played their 2nd round Kent Cup football game on Tuesday 1st October, against Harris Beckenham on their turf. It turned out to be a great team performance as they managed to beat Harris 8-1 (with some of their key players missing from the squad). As the game kicked off, it didn't take long for Bexley Grammar to get on the score sheet, with Will Benedict getting the first goal. Just as we were approaching half-time, Bexley managed to score a second thanks to a header from Zach D-H following after a brilliant cross from Alfred. The team went into half-time with a two-goal advantage over their opponents. During the second half, Bexley Grammar were able to score 6 more goals, with Will Benedict getting four, Maxim Taflaj and Zach D-H getting 2 each. Overall, it was a great performance from the team, despite conceding one goal towards the end of the match, and they would proceed on to the next round.

Year 8 football
The Year 8 football team put on some performance on Monday in the Kent Cup, beating Bullers Wood 6-2. A real squad performance with the encouragement and attitude brilliant right from the start. There was also some great skill on show as the opposition struggled to put a stop to our attacks. A special mention to Xavier for scoring 4 of the goals.

Badminton club is under way on Friday mornings. A good start to the day. The girls are working towards their competition in November.

Year 7 Netball v Chislehurst and Sidcup grammar
The first Year 7 netball game was against Chis and Sid. Plenty of energy, great team work and smiley faces! One draw and one win. Great work ladies. Excellent home crowd and supportive parents/carers.

Year 11 netball
A huge well done to our fantastic Year 11 netball teams for some brilliant results at the Bexley U16 Netball Tournament on Tuesday,
Both our A and B teams showed some great skills in both attack and defence, working well as a team and showing versatility within their positions. The A team managed to win all of their games and secured first place, whilst our B team grew in strength throughout the tournament.
A special mention to Ariana and Ayaka for their accurate shooting and quick movement in the A team; and Isabella and Anagha for their positive attitude and great play on court for the B team.

Nehi Rajkarnikar, Year 7, represents the Welling United Blues U12 who are currently the top 3 (all tied up at 9 points) teams in their league. She is also a keen swimmer currently with the Bexley Swimming Club, coming second in the Kent Junior League and representing BGS at the recent swimming gala.Well done to you for all your successes!

Well done to the Year 8 rugby team, who performed brilliantly in a narrow defeat to Beths on Tuesday. The boys tackled and rucked ferociously, and were pleased to score 4 excellent tries.Well done to the debutants especially!

The Year 10 rugby team played some great rugby in a double header vs Wilmington Grammar and Buller’s Wood on Thursday. After a narrow defeat in the first game, the boys roared to a 24-5 win vs Buller’s thanks to a brilliant hat-trick from Joshua.Well done to Alex and Grayson for their debuts, too. Very proud of the boys.

Wednesday saw our two Year 10 teams take on St Matthew’s Academy. The 'A Team' started with accurate shooting and fast play along the court and continued to build on their lead throughout the whole game. With only 7 players, the team worked hard to win 18-8. Sophie was selected as player of the match for her super shooting and on court leadership.
The 'B Team' started slowly, but managed to gain momentum as the game progressed. With some new players to the team and some Year 11 players filling in the gaps, by the end we were playing some lovely netball!
Well done to Ayaka, who was the player of the match, and well done to everyone!

Year 7 Football
Today, Bexley Grammar played against Royal Greenwich Trust. The score was 2-6. The match kicked off and Greenwich were maintaining very high pressure. Thanks to that pressure, they managed to get the ball in the middle of the pitch, and they scored an early goal with a great strike going into the bottom corner. The game went on, and then we had our own goal-scoring chance. Harry had the ball in the midfield, and he passed it to Aaraav on the left wing. He crossed the ball into the box with Jayden and then Reese narrowly missed it. After that, Greenwich were very quick to score a second. It took us something like 5 minutes to score our first, with Reese snatching a rebound from Jayden’s cross. Then the opposition scored 2 (the third being a penalty) more, and we were 4-1 down at half-time. In the second half, we played much better and that led to Reese scoring his second with some great play between Jayden and Onyi down the wing. Following that, we continued to play well, but we received a great blow as we conceded 2 goals more.
Even though we lost, I think that we played very well considering that it was our first match, and we are still getting used to playing as a team. I would like to give special praise to Harry and Neev because I think that they really battled it out today. Reese also did very well, scoring both our team’s goals.Santi Martinez, Year 7
I was really proud of the team’s efforts against a strong Royal Greenwich Trust side. The boys battled all the way and the scoreline had an unfair gloss on it by the end as we pushed to get an equaliser late on. Santi was an excellent captain on the day and really led by example. I look forward to other players taking this responsibility in the future. Thank you to everyone who turns up for training, which will continue to be after school on Wednesday evenings. It was also lovely to meet parents who were able to attend the game. Your support is incredibly valuable to the boys. If you wish to attend matches, please sign in at Reception.

Published 11/09/24Great Britain's Triumph at the Paris Olympics
The Paris 2024 Olympics was an inspiring showcase of Great Britain’s dedication, talent, and perseverance. Our athletes shone on the global stage, bringing home an impressive haul of medals across various sports, from athletics and cycling to swimming and gymnastics. Team GB won 65 medals at the end of the Olympics in Paris, beating their Tokyo total by one. Their success is a testament to the power of hard work, teamwork, and a passion for sport. One of the most memorable moments was watching our athletes embody the Olympic motto: "Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together." This powerful message isn't just for elite athletes, it’s a reminder for all of us that through sport, we can push our limits and achieve incredible things, especially when we support each other. As you reflect on the Paris Games, think about how you can bring that same spirit into your own life. Whether it’s joining a new sports team, setting personal fitness goals, or simply trying something new, sport offers countless opportunities to grow and succeed. You don’t have to be an Olympian to experience the joy and benefits of staying active and working towards your best self.
The resilience of these young Olympic athletes from around the world reminds us that it is a beautiful accomplishment to win a medal, but the beauty lies in the trying. Félix Dolci will have to live the rest of his life wondering about the "what-if" of that moment after his fall in gymnastics, but the rest of the world received a masterclass in how to dust yourself off and try again. Dolci is not the only athlete to suffer a major blow and keeps on going. Brazilian gymnast Flavia Saraiva competed with a black eye after a bad fall in practice to help her team earn a Bronze medal, U.S. trail cyclist Haley Batten suffered a broken wheel early in her race and came back to claim silver. And so many others who have experienced a tough time yet kept on going, medal or not. Too often in the Olympics, we focus on medal counting and breaking records, but the real lessons come from the athletes themselves. It is not only talent that makes them Olympians, but hard work, dedication, and tremendous perseverance. I think we forget that sometimes. Life often does not go our way, even when we've worked incredibly hard to prepare ourselves for the big moments. An important message for our BGS students as they tackle this academic year.

Exam Success
Congratulations to all our GCSE and IB students who received their results in the summer. Another successful year for BGS Sport, Exercise and Health Students with a 100% pass rate for both Standard Level and Higher Level alongside 70% of the GCSE students achieving a grade 9-7. We are looking forward to the 2024-2025 season with our examination classes as we also undertake a new specification for the Year 12s.
Extra-curricular news
If your child is interested in playing netball, BGS netball will be running on different nights after school outside on the newly painted courts:
- Mondays - Year 7s
- Wednesdays - Years 10 to Sixth Form
- Thursdays - Years 8 & 9
Girls football also takes place after school. A great opportunity with Charlton Football Club running the first 6-week sessions on Thursdays after school and then this will move to Tuesdays after school from October. Hopefully, we will be successful in the Kent Cups this year!

What about our sporting achievements at BGS? Did one of the Olympic sports inspire your child to become active and explore the outdoors? Great Britain's Charlie Hatton won downhill mountain bike gold at the 2023 World Cycling Championships in August. Do we have a future champion? We know some students are quietly modest about their successes, but we would love to celebrate their achievements. If your child has represented their district, County, Borough or shown success in their sport, we would love to know. Please keep the PE department updated with their successes so we can regularly update our Honours Board. Let’s showcase the BGS talent!

On the last Friday of term, we were delighted to hold a Sports Awards brunch for our prize winners. Students were given awards by Mr Gilmore for both their dedication to co-curricular sport, and for various successes and team performances. Thank you to all of our winners, and to every student that has attended a co-curricular sports club this year. Finally, the rain stopped on Wednesday to allow our U15’s to play cricket against CSGS. A narrow loss against a very experienced team, our girls did us proud as always. The attitude and team spirit this bunch has is amazing! Well done all, especially to Eloise, named as opposition player of the match!

U13 Cricket - Regional Finals
A huge well done to the cricketers who represented us brilliantly in the regional finals on Monday at Sidcup Cricket Club. They've learnt so much and improved a great deal this season. Well played everyone. Good end to the season.Mrs Kemp, PE Department
BOYS' Tennis
Well done to our Year 7 & 8 tennis players, who secured a fantastic victory in our tennis fixture vs Hurstmere on Wednesday. After losing the doubles 5-4, the boys roared back to win 6-4 in the singles, winning the match 10-9 overall. Well done to both teams for some very impressive tennis.
