Year 12: Residential at Juniper Hall, Surrey

Geography taking learning to the field
In the last few weeks, the Geography department has taken the Year 12 IB students out of the classroom to carry out fieldwork. It has been a busy but hugely rewarding time.

Students attended a 3-day residential trip to Juniper Hall field studies centre to complete their data collection for their Geography IA. This makes up 25% of the SL students' final grade and 20% of the HL students' grade. Students have collected a wide range of primary data from a number of sites along the course of the river. This saw students pull on their wellingtons and get into the river for an action-packed day.
Data collection included: river width, depth and velocity. Once back at the centre and after a slice of delicious banana cake, all the students set about analysing the data. This saw students create their own GIS maps, graphs and carry out statistical analysis. Many students termed this an ‘IA boot camp’ and some even wished that they could have these ‘boot camps’ for all subjects!
