EmpowHer

Objectives

EmpowHer is a student-led women’s empowerment society founded in September 2024, designed to raise awareness about the challenges women face daily in the modern world and to explore ways we, as a school community, can work toward a more equal and inclusive future. Our goal is to challenge and dismantle the ingrained misogyny that often goes unnoticed because it has become so normalised in society. At Bexley Grammar School, we uphold strong principles against discrimination, and put these principles into practice to create a real impact on students. Within EmpowHer, we explore a range of topics, including where empowerment can be found and lost within society, how to find strength from within, and how the trailblazing women of the past can guide us toward a future free of past mistakes. Ultimately, we aim to be a catalyst for change.

Meetings

Through examining the lives of influential women like Mary Jackson and Katherine Switzer, we facilitate open discussions and encourage participants to share their thoughts in a safe, non-judgmental space. In addition to discussions, we organise monthly debates around thought-provoking questions and statements, fostering dialogue that includes diverse perspectives from all parts of the school community. We actively encourage the participation of all students, not just females, as their viewpoints offer valuable insights that might otherwise be overlooked. EmpowHer is not about undermining men - it is about highlighting the long-standing discrimination women have faced for generations and breaking that cycle.

Events and initiatives

EmpowHer has already seen significant success through events such as our sports and charity initiatives. The EmpowHer Mixed Team Basketball event in autumn is always a major success, drawing a large crowd to watch and support the game. The event centres around the theme of equality in sports, and sparks important discussions about the advantages and challenges of having both genders play alongside one another. Another successful event has been the EmpowHer Bake Sale, in collaboration with the ‘Women’s Aid’ charity, supporting victims of domestic violence. We raised over £150, which went directly to Women’s Aid. This event not only celebrated the talents of our members but also showcased the true purpose of the society, and why we do what we do. Looking ahead, we will continue to host similar events and plan out-of-school trips to further broaden our exploration and learning.
