English Literature
Literature gives students an opportunity to explore the world, history and human emotions and experiences through the minds of some of the greatest writers in history. The course develops analytical skills, essay writing skills and discursive skills as well as aiming to produce well-rounded students. The A Level offers students an opportunity to study a wide variety of writers from different contexts, view points and time periods and we support and nurture students while encouraging independent workers and thinkers.
Each Literature group may study different texts, depending on the interests and expertise of the teachers who will teach the group throughout the course. The department endeavours to give students a comprehensive spread of works that we hope will enthuse and enlighten students, and also prepare those who are considering Literature at university, or indeed any subject that includes analysis, critical thinking and creative skills such as Law, History or Psychology.
Studying English A-Level opens the door to a wide range of aspirational careers, including writing and journalism, law and public policy, marketing and branding, education and academia, film and media, corporate communications, and cultural leadership. Strong skills in communication, critical thinking, and creativity also make English students well suited to emerging roles such as user interfacing for content strategy and digital media as well as careers in Finance and Industry.
