Peer Mentoring

At the start of the year, every student had the opportunity to apply for the role of peer mentor.
What initially seemed like a rather simple role actually provided a variety of positive experiences that we might not have encountered otherwise.
Our first experience as peer mentors was the training day. This involved a day away from school where we received advice and training from the school counselling team. It was an opportunity to interact with other peer mentors while developing and practising our communication skills, which proved imperative during sessions with our assigned mentees. The training provided us with a strong foundation and also made the initially nerve-wracking task of supporting our mentees feel much more manageable.
Alongside our training, we were given several other opportunities, including the Year 7 Induction Day. Working alongside another Peer Mentor, we were assigned to a Year 7 form, helping students move between rooms, supporting teachers and answering questions throughout the day. Being someone they could talk to helped students settle into an unfamiliar environment and become more comfortable. It was rewarding to see their confidence grow and helped us develop our ability to adapt our communication to different people.
A highlight of our peer mentorship was the opportunity to support forms during Sports Day. In this role, we aided younger pupils in managing and running their stall, as well as ensuring that everyone felt included. Through our joint communication and collaboration, we were able to make sure the students had the freedom and ability to enjoy themselves and have fun throughout the day. Furthermore, it was a great opportunity for us to build stronger relationships with younger students and nurture their wellbeing.
Overall, we have loved every moment of our responsibilities as Peer Mentors. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience to empower younger students and help improve their social and academic confidence.
