Oxford University German Olympiad

The Oxford German Olympiad is an annual competition run by the Oxford German Network to promote German language and culture among school pupils across the UK.
It is open to students from Year 5 to Year 13. It features creative, themed tasks—such as video making, writing, or designing - designed to encourage engagement with the language. This year, the theme was Immer unterwegs - Mobilität und Reiselust (Always on the go – mobility and wanderlust.) The following students submitted entries and we are awaiting the results.
I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in the Oxford German Olympiad, and really enjoyed writing my essay. At first, I was unsure about where to begin and what to write, but once I had made a start, I had hit the word limit before I knew it! The theme of this competition was mobility and the desire to travel, and I wrote an essay on the future of vehicles. Throughout my essay, I wrote about electric cars (Elektroautos), driverless cars (Fahrerlose Autos), and even about flying cars (Fliegende Autos)!
I would like to thank the MFL department again for all the amazing opportunities we are provided with, such as this competition.

I enjoyed writing this short story for the German Olympiad – since the theme was transport and travel, my story centres around a girl called Lena on her car journey to school where she is always on her phone and social media. One day, she is forced to walk with her friends instead and Lena actually really enjoys it – she learns that time spent with people you love is more important than time spent on social media.
