Year 7 Science Club News 5/11/25

For the past 3 weeks, the Science Club has been running every Tuesday, during lunchtime, at 12:50pm in the M16.

Lava Lamps

Over the course of the 3 weeks, there have been many fun activities to do. One of those included making a lava lamp. The end results turned out to be very good, and you even got to take your cool lava lamp home (optional).

Here is a good guide to make your own lava lamp:

Materials

  • Jar/clear bottles
  • Oil
  • Tablets
  • Water
  • Food colouring
  • Torch (optional)

Method

  1. Fill the jar/bottle with ¾ full of oil.
  2. Add water, but leave a bit of room at the top.
  3. Add food colouring (this will not affect the oil).
  4. Break up the tablet into smaller pieces. This will make the reaction last longer.
  5. Drop a piece of the tablet into the bottle. This is when the bubbles start occurring, making a fizzing lava effect.
  6. If you wish, you can shine a torch under the bottle for a glowing effect.

Egg Challenge

We also carried out a notorious egg challenge. With the supplies given, we had to protect an egg from a fall from table height. Miraculously, not a single egg cracked!

The following week, we did the same again, however dropping the eggs from double the height. A few eggs cracked at this attempt, but many didn't.

Science Club is quite a delight, with new and fun activities every week, and we hope you come along and join us!
