Record-breaking IB success emerging from Covid!

Congratulations to year 13 IB students and their teachers for superb IB success despite two years of disrupted learning. They set new fully IB cohort records for an examination year, 6% higher grades than our 2019 cohort who themselves had set records!

This year we celebrate the record-breaking achievements of a 206-strong cohort who were unable to sit their GCSE examinations two years ago and therefore sat their first ever public examinations in May. Receiving results so early in the summer is a distinct advantage; nearly 90% have already (7th July) been accepted into their first or reserve choice of university, 6 of those into Oxford.

Two students, Elysia Reine Manuel and Sam Wilson, achieved the maximum of 45 points (only 275 students worldwide (2019) achieved the perfect IB score!). Alison Balint dropped only one point to gain 44 points while Santhakuma Arjunan (who still gained the maximum 7 points in all 6 of his subjects and joins his sister Menaka, already studying medicine at Oxford), Tymofii Bekh, Ethan Hosier, Dilshanth Nagulathas and Lucas Zurdo Symons, all scored 43 points. 30 students gained 40 points or more and nearly a quarter of our students gained 38 points or more, a typical Oxford offer.

As a flagship for the IB, Bexley Grammar School has the only fully-IB Sixth Form in a South East London borough and stands proudly alongside the highly successful IB grammar schools across Kent which deliver the depth, breadth and challenge of the IB Diploma, demonstrably the best preparation for higher education and for a fulfilling future.

Mr Elphick was delighted. “This cohort is very special. They experienced disruption to their education on a scale we could not have imagined a few years ago. They have demonstrated tremendous cooperation, flexibility and resilience to achieve these impressive results. It is remarkable that the average achievement of our 206 students in UCAS points easily exceeds 3 A* grades at A level or equates to a little more than 4 A grades at A level.” He continued, “I am so happy for our students, their teachers, their families, indeed for the whole BGS community which celebrates such strong outcomes from the world-class education they have enjoyed. The rest of the summer is now theirs to enjoy, secure in the knowledge that they will be studying at some of the most prestigious universities in the world this autumn.”
