Year 9 trip to PGL, Barton Hall

We came, we had an amazing time, we loved PGL!

Year 9 had an incredible trip to PGL at Barton Hall, Devon. Despite rain and wind, all the 145 students took part in a diverse range of adventure and team-building activities. All the staff and students had a fabulous couple of days together. We even got to see Stonehenge on our journey, which was a great-added bonus!

Some of our activities included: Survivor, which saw dens built and campfires lit with a flint and steel.

We climbed up and abseiled down as well and completed the vertical challenge. Nothing would stop us reaching the top.

Student comments

A fun experience with a variety of activities and games as well as there always being something to do during free time.

Roshan Jinse, 9MPM

I loved PGL, it was one of my best experiences.

I was scared to go at first, but I'm so glad I went because I got to try so many new things and activities I would never have done otherwise. I would definitely go again!

Sophie Allen, 9FTM

It was great fun. I enjoyed participating in the activities with my friends.

Luke Martin, 9MPM

A very nice experience. Many exciting activities, such as climbing, shooting and swimming. There were decent options for food, especially for Vegetarians and Vegans, which was very good for me personally. The people treated us very well and were very helpful. The rooms included bathrooms as well. Overall, it was a great experience and kept us away from our phones. I would definitely recommend it.

Bhavin Mulchandani, 9STA

PGL was a fun and memory-creating experience that we were all very lucky to go to. The activities were engaging, including archery, swimming, rifle shooting and abseiling, with my favourite one being the vertical challenge. The afternoon activities were great, with the disco getting all of us up and onto the dance floor having a fun time with our friends. Unfortunately, the campfire was cancelled due to the rain but the teachers and PGL leaders came through with a knowledge-testing quiz to end the second day. We left for school early afternoon the next day; all of us gutted to leave an experience behind that we'll talk about for years to come. On the way back, we drove past Stonehenge, just to top it off. Overall, this trip is not one I'll forget in a while.

Year 10 MFL2 Public Speaking Finals

Last Wednesday, the 9 finalists of the Year 10 MFL2 Public Speaking Competition gathered in L6 for the final round. Each candidate presented the speech that had secured their victory in their respective classes:

Braiden (Italian)
Harvey (Italian)
Hana (Spanish)
I
sabelle (Spanish)
Ritad (Spanish)
Millie (German)
Aashraya (Japanese)
Darina (Russian)
Lev (Chinese)

The judging panel, composed of three Sixth Form students, assessed each speech based on three criteria: message, intonation, and delivery. After all nine speeches were presented, the panel reconvened to nominate the winner, 2nd place, and 3rd place. This was a particularly challenging decision due to the high quality of all the speeches.

Our heartfelt congratulations to:

  • Hana for winning 1st place
  • Darina for securing 2nd place
  • Harvey for achieving 3rd place

We extend our gratitude to all nine participants and their friends for attending the finale with such a positive attitude, and to our judges - Sifat, James, and Jasreen - for their time and professionalism.

PE News

Our Year 7 and 8 girls cricket teams travelled to Blackheath High School for a game on Tuesday evening. The Year 7 team were playing their first competitive match for school and they played fantastically. The team was victorious, winning by only one run. Some very impressive bowling and batting from everyone; well done! A special mention to Krista, voted the best bowler, Aarohi, voted the best batter, and Florence, who scored the most runs.

The Year 8 team also displayed some great fielding and batting skills, but were narrowly beaten by an experienced Blackheath team. Matilda was voted player of the match for her excellent skills and teamwork.

Trial addition to School Uniform for July 2024

Dear parents / carers,

In response to staff and student feedback, we are going to trial the wear of school shorts during the last weeks of this term. Year 7-10 students will be allowed to wear shorts to school (without their blazers) from Monday 1st July. These must be mid or dark grey school shorts and not sportswear or fashion wear. Socks should remain as either plain black or grey, or white, as have been worn accordingly this year.

There are some examples of acceptable wear linked below. Please note that these are examples, and we are not insisting that shorts are purchased from these shops:

https://www.caseysschoolwear.co.uk/cargo-shorts-grey-slim-fit-p-1048.html

https://www.next.co.uk/style/st255109/597618#597618

At the end of the trial period, the school will review its success, with one factor under consideration being the level of student adherence to the prescribed style of shorts.

Best wishes,

H.J. Gilmore
