Baltic States Trip 2024

At 5am on the first day of the Easter holidays, a group of sleepy Russian-speaking students from Year 9 up to Year 13 embarked on a six-day adventure in Latvia and Estonia. Between balmy, sunny Riga at 17°C and rainy, snowy, windy Tallinn at 0°C, we had it all - culture and history, VR games, a cooking workshop, a walk in the woods and a visit to an Estonian Russian-speaking school. For many students, it was the first residential secondary school trip, a chance to spend time with their friends in a new environment. Not just the students, the members of staff who went on the trip had an amazing time too!

Baltic States Trip 2024
The school trip to the Baltic States was phenomenal. It was a great opportunity to experience the cultures of the Baltic States, and gain an insight into their fascinating history. It was also a great opportunity to practice my Russian - I purchased so many Russian books on the trip, my suitcase bur...

Jack Petchey Regional Final

A big congratulation to Louis and Hattie for their brilliant speeches for the Jack Petchey Regional final (public speaking competition) on Monday 18th March, just before the Easter break.

It was a tough competition, but both students were so well-prepared and delivered powerful, confident speeches. They were so courageous too (speaking to an auditorium full of parents, friends and students from different Bexley schools).

Although they did not place within the first three positions, they performed very well and put the school in a good light. They were presented with certificates by the Deputy Mayor of Bexley, Councillor Nigel Betts. Well done again to Louis and Hattie - we are all very proud of you both!

Ms Adeaga, Leader of KS4 English

Here’s what Louis had to say about the whole experience:

We arrived at Chis and Sid at 4:00 and had a speaking workshop to improve our confidence. We had to write a speech, lasting from 1:30 to 3:00 mins, before the date. After having some delicious food and having a tech rehearsal, the final show came around. It was full of fantastic speeches with topics ranging from the power of writing to the meaning of life. It was a night full of food for thought.

Although it was very nerve-inducing, the audience, staff and other competitors were incredibly supportive, and I felt proud of how I spoke about my topic: challenging ableism. It was an amazing opportunity to make incredible friendships and I have kept in contact with almost everyone that I met there, and it is an experience I will never forget!

I encourage any current Year 9 students to look forward to next year, when they get a chance to perform a speech in front of their class, Year, or even in the regional final including judges such as previous winners, and seize the opportunity when it arises.

Finally, I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved in the competitions, from my friends and family who came, to workshop leaders like Sarah and Emily, to Hattie and all the other friends I met and of course the English department, especially Ms Adeaga, for organising and supporting us the whole time.

Louis Luckman, Year 10

Here’s what Hattie had to say:

On Monday 18th March, I went to Chis and Sid Grammar School to take part in the Jack Petchey Speak out Challenge Regional Finals, Bexley. The night was amazing! I arrived at 4:00 to have a workshop to build our confidence and get to know all the other students from Bexley Schools. After that, we performed our speeches in front of friends and family.

Unfortunately, we did not come in the top three. However, the night was great fun! I recommend this to everyone as it is a great night to improve confidence when speaking publicly!

TSBA Ceremony

On Thursday 25th April 2024, we went to the TSBA ceremony at Latymer Upper School. To get there, we got the train to Victoria and then the tube to the school. When we got there, there was a lovely ceremony where all the student winners were announced for the creative responses and the book review competitions. Then the author winners of TSBA and the Trinity+ were awarded (Rebel Skies by Ann Sei Lin for TSBA and Lies like Wildfires by Jennifer Lynn Alvarez for Trinity+). After that, there were 'elemental' themed snacks, and we could get our books signed by the authors that were there and take pictures with them too. After that, we got the tube and train back to school. Of course, this wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing Mrs Carey. So thank you for everything you do for us, Mrs Carey.

Liv, Year 8

The book trip was great fun! - just like last year! We got books signed and had some nice snacks too. We found out who won the TSBA awards (Rebel Skies) which I would recommend reading as it’s very good.

Overall, it was an excellent trip with the best librarian, Mrs Carey. I hope to do it again next year!

Grace, Year 8

In the autumn term, my two book groups read 14 books as part of the Trinity Schools Book Awards, voted on their favourites and eagerly awaited the awards ceremony where we found out which authors would take the trophies.

I was lucky enough to take nine students from Years 7-10 to Latymer Upper School to watch the ceremony, see their competition submissions displayed and meet the authors. We spent a lot of time with Teri Terry, author of Dark Blue Rising, quizzing her on how she comes up with ideas for her books, and discovering that sometimes she dreams them!

Thank you to the generous PTA who paid for the books and our participation in the awards ceremony. The students loved it and have already asked to take part again next year!

MFL Diploma

For their MFL Diploma Year 7, students created a piece of work about themselves using the vocabulary they have learnt in lessons so far this year. Diplomas were judged on the quality of language and presentation.

This year we had some absolutely wonderful projects with examples of outstanding language and creativity. The award for Best French Diploma goes to Suriya (7JR) and the Best German Diploma to Aysu (7LC).

Well done to all our Year 7 students for completing this project on time and to such a high standard.

Year 8 Cricket

The cricket season got underway with a brilliant 95 win in the Kent Cup for the Year 8 boys.  A stunning 19 ball, 50 from Atharva got us off to a flying start and great team bowling sealed the win!

What a win! The Year 8 cricket team won with 2 balls to spare to win their second game of the week, this time against Wilmington GS. In driving rain, captain Ethan hit the winning runs with a boundary. Great knocks from Atharva and Sebastian were huge. Well played

Mr Lines, Head of PE

Congratulations Alice!

Huge congratulations to Alice Black and her netball team. Alice went to Sunderland to compete last weekend and came an impressive 7th in England!  Alice plays for Kent County Netball Club. Following an initial qualifying regional tournament and 14 matches throughout the season, they gained a place at the U16 National Finals. The 18 best teams in England played over 2 days, in Sunderland, at the Beacon of Light Stadium. Their team, KCNC, won 5 of their 7 matches in the Finals, only losing to the eventual winners and another top team. Congratulations to Alice, an excellent GD circle defender who played every match, blocking out the opposition, defending shots and making interceptions to turn the play over. She is part of an amazing team, who worked brilliantly together to beat tough opponents, and we can proudly say they came 7th in the country.

Teamwork at its best!

The PE department is proud of your success, Alice. Well done!

Year 10 exam session complete!

I would like to congratulate Year 10 students for their hard work through this set of exams.  They have shown maturity in their conduct and their punctuality to the exams.  Attendance has been outstanding - well done.

Thank you to all parents & carers for their support with these exams - it is an important first step towards the main GCSEs in year 11 - providing familiarity with the requirements of the exam hall, and valuable experience in preparation for more formal assessments.

Exam results will be issued to students in their assembly on 16th May.

Online extortion

A Guide for Parents

With incidents of extortion significantly on the increase, it's important that parents know the signs and how to help and support their children. Although anybody can be targeted, the surge appears to be directed at boys aged 14+ and the motivation is usually financial. In the past, offenders would often threaten to share the victims intimate images with friends and family, but that very rarely happened. However, the police are now starting to see this happen more frequently, including threats made against victims.

You can find a web page to support from Internet Matters HERE.
