Year 10 Football

Congratulations to the Year 10 football team, who secured an impressive 4-3 win over Cleeve Park to go top of their pool. BGS opened with 2 goals (William and Tom) before half-time before Cleve fought back to level twice at 2-2 and 3-3 (William with his second to put BGS 3-2 in front). A clinical finish from Zach, late on, secured the win.

Year 8 Basketball

Basketball got underway for 2024 on Thursday, with the Year 8s playing two games against Haberdasher’s Crayford.  Well played boys!

Ski trip Austria 2025

50 pupils were selected using a number randomiser app for the ski trip in 2025.  Students were also randomly selected to be on the wait list.  All parents/carers of those pupils who were successful in securing a place will have received an email indicating this.  Apologies to those who were not successful this time.

Literacy News

Well done to everyone who entered the 'This is Me' Poetry competition. All poems were anonymised and judged by a panel of staff and Sixth Form English Prefects. They were incredibly impressed by the quality of work and found it very difficult to decide on an overall winner.

Prizes were awarded to the top three poems in our end of term assembly before Christmas. Congratulations to Nibodh Shrestha (8GTG), Princess Otto (8ERR) and Nifemi Abimbola (8ERR), who won the top awards! Please see below Nibodh's winning poem.

1st Place
Ripples of Me

Looking into a pond, a reflection you will see
The ripples of water, consisting of me.
Appearing calm, with elegance bestowed
A piece of art, precisely composed

Full of aid, the guiding light,
Shining ever so bright,
Showing the way,
Among the excellence of my rays

Upon the gaze of a mirror, you will see
My soul’s reflection, still and free
Appearing calm, with elegance bestowed
A piece of art, precisely composed

Thoughtfully orchestrated, a euphonious tune
From all dissonance, it is immune
The thoughtful composition is of such fashion
My harmonies showing much compassion

Through a window, you will see
The echoed essence of me
Appearing calm, with elegance bestowed
A piece of art, precisely composed

A tree all full of ripe fruits
For only giving it pursuits
All the nourishment it shall provide
Every fruit eaten comes a bounteous tide

In my reflections I discover my core
As the world continues more and more
Guided by light, seen through art
I shall have presented myself by my heart.

Nibodh Shrestha

Our next Young Writers Competition is 'Fright Club'.  A ghost story is a timeless classic style of creative writing, and we're inviting Year 8 to write their own short story inspired by things that go bump in the night! They could be inspired by a real place that is rumoured to be haunted, choose a supernatural being to be the star of their story or even be a ghost hunter telling us of their experiences. We encourage them to use atmosphere, tension and suspense to create their own hair-raising tale. Please note that there is a 250-word limit with prizes being awarded at the end of Spring term assembly. Deadline: Monday 25th March (submitted to Mrs Boulden)

Calling all budding artists! We are in need of form crests for the upcoming KS3 Diploma Celebration Evening. The winning crest for each form will be added to the certificates issued to pupils. Use your imagination to design a badge or crest and be sure to incorporate the House colours and animals in your image. Please complete on A4 paper and submit it to Mrs Boulden by 25th March.

Some general reminders for the KS3 Diploma

  • The academic tasks for this half-term are History and Maths. As always, we expect pupils to try their very best with these projects and make sure that they are handed in on time. Please note that the grade they are awarded for their Maths project must be one of their best ten grades that will contribute to their overall Diploma grade.
  • A quick reminder that pupils should aim to be involved in at least one House event this year and continue to be involved with extracurricular clubs.
  • The literacy and art-based tasks noted above are some great ways for pupils to continue notching up their Creativity, Action and Service skills, which we will be reflecting on after half-term.
  • If you require any further information regarding the KS3 Diploma, the handbook can be found on our school website or by clicking here.

Performing with the London Schools Symphony Orchestra (LSSO)

Mia Nguyen, Year 10, was recently invited back to perform with the London Schools Symphony Orchestra at the beginning of this term at the Barbican. Some of you may remember she performed last year for the first time, but this year Mia was promoted to the first violins, a very prestigious opportunity!

The orchestra performed Rachmaninov's Paganini Rhapsody and the magnificent Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz. It was truly amazing by all accounts, and so impressive that a young ensemble overall performed with such maturity and sensitivity whilst also being able to react as emerging professionals of their fields.

Mia's friends also came to support her performance, and were  thoroughly impressed. They reported:

Mia performing with the LSSO, let alone at the Barbican Centre, makes us so proud of her; we were so amazed by the performance they gave us, and it was such a good experience. We were even more surprised to find out that she was one of the younger students there, considering she played at such a high standard. We hope to attend another one of her amazing performances.

Ayaka and Darina

Well done Mia on grasping such a wonderful opportunity, and we look forward to hearing more for you and our other music students!

Mrs Goddard, Head of Music

Social media influencers can have a huge impact on their followers. Research shows that approximately one third of children and young people think that because the influencer is a 'celebrity', what they share is always positive. However, there are, of course, many differing views a...
