Congratulations James!

Badminton

James Ng (8FIM) continues to collect medals - recently winning a gold and bronze at the Kent Junior Restricted Tournament, and gold and bronze again at another tournament at the start of September.  James is going to be heading up our KS3 boys National Championships squad for this year, so it's great to see him in such good form.

Don't forget to share your successes!

If you are taking part in sport outside school we always want to hear about it and share your success.  Do let your PE teacher know, so that we can share your success with the rest of the school community.

Junior Netball

And we are off... the courts and fields were packed with sports aplenty; Co-curricular is definitely under way at BGS, with a fantastic turnout to Year 7 and 8 netball this week!  Four Year 8 teams and three Year 7 teams is an impressive start to the 2023-2024 season.  Firstly, thank you to the Year 8s for nurturing the Year 7 netballers through their first experience at secondary school and also to our Year 9 leaders who showed what we do best at BGS - volunteering to help others.  A successful evening all round.

Year 8 Notices

A big welcome back to Year 8. I hope everyone had a lovely summer and are well and truly back in the swing of the school year. We welcome Miss Gowdie and Miss Surplus to the Year 8 tutor team. Miss Gowdie will be working with 7KLH (now 8GTG) and Miss Surplus will be working with Miss Rendle and 8ERR. Please note that form tutors will be checking student planners every Monday morning during academic monitoring. We do ask all parents and carers to take a minute over the weekend to sign their child’s planner to see how their week has been with regard to homework and notes from teachers.

We will be resuming our work with the KS3 Diploma programme which will run through the autumn and spring terms. As previously, the handbook can be found on our school website or by clicking here. There are 7 remaining academic tasks with the Classics and Music projects happening this half-term. We expect all pupils to try their very best with these projects and ensure that they are handed in on time. A quick reminder that pupils should be aiming to be involved with at least one House event this year and continue to be involved with extracurricular clubs.

Finally, we will be launching the ‘This is Me’ young writers' poetry competition this term. There is no word limit or poetry style that needs to be adhered to. Participation is voluntary, but we would definitely encourage pupils who need to build up their CAS hours.

Young Writers invites you to write a poem that explores who you are and who you want to be. We want to give you the opportunity to stand in the spotlight and tell us your opinions and what you care about. Whether you write about your emotions, your life, your impact on the world or your hobbies or favourite things, ‘This Is Me’ gives you the freedom to truly express yourself.

Deadline to submit poems to Mrs Boulden via Google Classroom: Friday 13th October.

Good luck Year 8!

Mrs Boulden, Director of Studies

Year 10 & 11 News

KS4 Homework Club

We are pleased to offer Year 10 & 11 students their own weekly Homework Club session.  This will run on a Thursday after school (3.15 - 4.00pm) in H11.  It will provide the opportunity to complete work before leaving school in a quiet environment, supervised by a member of the Year 10/11 pastoral teams.

This is for students to use on a voluntary basis, although if it is felt to be beneficial to support their studies, students may be invited to attend as the year progresses.

A Message from the Attendance Office

Dear Parents / Carers,

You may have seen in the national news recently that unfortunately the number of students missing education is at an all time high.  Here at BGS we have seen a slight increase in holidays during term time and absences due to sickness. We must remind parents/ carers that they are legally required to ensure that their child attends school every day and that they do not remove them from school during term time for a holiday.

With regard to absences due to sickness, please think carefully when keeping a child at home; there is usually no need to be absent with a minor ailment such as a headache, body ache, stomachache, colds, feeling under the weather etc.

Only the school can authorise an absence; if the reason you have provided is not valid then we will not be able to authorise this period of absence.  Please keep absences to a minimum. We work with Bexley Education Authority who issue Fixed Penalty Notices to all parents/ carers who remove their child from school during term time for a holiday.  We also make referrals to the EWO service for students with poor attendance.

If you have any concerns regarding your child's attendance please do not hesitate to contact your child's attendance officer for advice and support.
