Summer Sports News

Following on from the successful PE grades both for GCSE and IB it has been a busy summer for Sport. Will BGS manage to follow in the sporting success for 2023-2024?

Football News

Immensely proud of our IB Sport Science student edging his way to the Premier League. Congratulations to 17 year old Jonathan Lawson who after a successful trial with Watford FC over the summer has been rewarded with a one-year contract with an additional one-year option.  Jonathan was one of the stand out performers last season in Cray Valley's U18 Isthmian East title winning side scoring 28 goals in 23 league and cup games. Exciting news for this talented footballer! This is where it all began in his younger days winning the U16 North Kent Cup.

And now… Striker for U18s Watford FC.

Other Sporting News

Girls' Football

This summer saw the Lionesses road to the Women’s World Cup Final. Through to the semi’s beating Columbia with a turnaround winner from Alessia Russo (superstar from Kent) and then a tense and thrilling final against Spain. Despite the phenomenal penalty save by Mary Earps, England’s journey sadly ended. We hope to see some of our students inspired by these sporting stars. There will be an exciting opportunity for Girls BGS Football as training will be run by Charlton Athletic after school. We are working alongside the Barclays Game Changer programme and are looking for other opportunities to explore. This will run on Tuesdays after school beginning on 19th September.  All welcome!

BGS values: intellect, courage and empathy.

BGS hopes to encourage our students to be like this image. A photo speaks a thousand words.

Empathy. Respect. Sportsmanship.

Netball News

Then onto Netball with England’s Roses - what an achievement from the Roses reaching the final of the Netball World Cup for the first time. England faced Australia in their first Netball World Cup final after their historic victory over defending champions New Zealand. At the semi-final game they were level after every quarter, but England pulled away in dramatic fashion in the last quarter to win
46-40. Unfortunately they missed out on the title, but it was an incredible journey for these ladies. If your daughter is interested in joining netball, BGS netball will be Wednesdays after school for Years 9,10,11 and Thursdays for Years 7 & 8 all on the courts outside.

Something Different

Does this sport inspire you to become active and explore the outdoors? Great Britain's Charlie Hatton won downhill mountain bike gold at the 2023 World Cycling Championships in August.

BGS has talent…

What about our sporting achievements at BGS? We know some students are quietly modest about their successes, but we would love to celebrate their achievements. If your child has represented their district, County, Borough or shown success in their sport, we would love to know. Please keep the PE department updated with their successes, so we can regularly update our Honours Board. Let’s showcase your talent! Get in touch with us:

Come and see one of us in the PE office to see how you can help.

Google Classroom codes for netball and football can be found on the Year group classrooms for you to join. Well done to all the Year 7s who attended the taster sessions in their first week. A fantastic opportunity to try out a new sport and a way to meet other students in the year group. All clubs begin week beginning 11th September. Remember the House events in the school calendar too. Catch up with your House Captains and Heads of Houses for further details.

What’s good to watch this week?

‘Rugby World Cup’ in France. A successful start for England in the first round. Can the Red and Whites triumph this year?  Catch the next game Sunday 17th September at 8pm v Japan.

A Message from the Attendance Office

Dear Parents/ Carers,

You may have seen in the national news recently that unfortunately the number of students missing education is at an all time high.  Here at BGS we have seen a slight increase in holidays during term time and absences due to sickness. We must remind parents/ carers that they are legally required to ensure that their child attends school every day and that they do not remove them from school during term time for a holiday.

With regard to absences due to sickness, please think carefully when keeping a child at home; there is usually no need to be absent with a minor ailment such as a headache, body ache, stomachache, colds, feeling under the weather etc.

Only the school can authorise an absence; if the reason you have provided is not valid then we will not be able to authorise this period of absence.  Please keep absences to a minimum. We work with Bexley Education Authority who issue Fixed Penalty Notices to all parents/ carers who remove their child from school during term time for a holiday.  We also make referrals to the EWO service for students with poor attendance.

If you have any concerns regarding your child's attendance please do not hesitate to contact your child's attendance officer for advice and support.
