MFL News

This half-term in Year 9 Spanish we have been learning about several different Spanish festivals. We have studied Las Fallas in Valencia, the crazy Tomatina in Buñol, and we have also looked at San Fermín, which takes place in Pamplona at the beginning of July every year. We were fortunate enough to have a Spanish lesson on the first day of San Fermín, so we decorated a pañuelo rojo and went outside to listen to a chupinazo speech from Kieron Kelpie. We couldn’t work out a health and safety friendly version of a bull run, but we watched one that had happened in Pamplona that day.

I’ve been really impressed with your interest in the new festivals we have studied, and hopefully one day some of you will get to experience one for yourselves!

iViva San Fermín!

Presentation to Year 12 HL Business & Management Students

On Thursday 29th June, one of our Year 12 HL Business and Management classes received an online presentation from Dianah Shaw, the owner and founder of Beagle Research, a market research company.

The presentation focussed on two cases studies: Rimmel’s marketing campaign to support its venture into ethical make-up; and the role of influencers in the introduction of Prime Energy drink.  Students fed back on their views of both products and the relative success of both of the advertising campaigns. Dianah also spent some time discussing her progression through the marketing industry, and we plan to hold a second presentation next term, so that students can learn a little more about careers in the marketing industry.

Mr Joe, Business & Economics Department

(We plan to repeat this presentation to other classes in Year 11 and 12)

National School Sports Week 2023
19th - 25th June 2023
Part 2

Tuesday 20th June - BGS Girls Primary Football Festival - Year 10 and 12 Leaders

As a part of the Barclays Game Changer, an initiative set up by the FA to help promote girls football, our Year 12 and 10 leaders led the local Bexley primary football festival to the following schools: 10 schools - Belmont, Harris Garrard, Hurst, Peareswood, Royal Park, St Fidelis, St Joseph's, St Peter Chanel, St Thomas More, Upton.

What a fantastic job delivering your Wildcats football sessions to the little ones supporting #LetsGirlsPlay initiative from the FA. They worked fantastically together, acting as superb role models for the younger students. Enthusiastic, adaptable and confident.

Well done all for making this a success for girls football.

Thank you for all your help

The rain didn’t stop our National School Sports Week fun!  The girls love a bit of bucket rounders.  Precision, nerves, speed, power and teamwork all tested in this competition.  Prothero were our overall winners.

Well done ladies!

  • Lisa Cao competed in 3 dance competitions in a form of Chinese traditional dance.
  • Sophia Lewis Year 7 - This Sunday I am going to all day try-outs for Kent Netball. It’s 6 hours of just netball on a team with people I have never met before. It’s a really good experience just to be put forward for this, and I can’t wait!

Prothero House

Highlights from the Year

Miss Ashman would like to thank the contributors to the newsletter who are: Princess, Abi and Mollie (just 3 of Prothero’s fantastic House Captains!), as well as all the students who participated in each event and gave it their all over the academic year of 2022-23.  It is exciting to think that it starts all over again come September!

House Music
(September / October 2022)

Participating in House music and watching the other forms’ performances was extremely fun. On the day of the performances, we performed in front of all the other House music participants from other forms, which was a little nerve wracking, but still fun. We also arranged the choreography that we practised. We had a great time watching other people’s performances as well. The other forms performed different types of songs, and they all interpreted them in many different ways. Although Prothero came in last place, I still thought our performance was really good. Whether we won or not doesn't really matter though as we still had a lot of fun.

Princess Matthews, 12ECG

Sports Day (June 2023)

Prothero did extremely well on Sports Day! Everyone worked together as a team to compete against the other Houses, and it was a lot of fun. All of our students were enthusiastic and many agreed to compete last minute to cover one of their teammates if they were unable to make it. The track events were especially exciting as there was a big audience watching all the races. It was a very successful day for us as a House.

Abi Grady, 12THW

As House Captains we are very proud of everyone who took part in sports day. I am especially proud of my Year 7 Prothero form as it is their very first sports day and the boys managed to come an overall first place as well as winning their relay race. The effort and creativity that went into each form's stall was amazing, and it was great to see each form work as a team.

Mollie Flanagan-Mills, 12THW

London Youth Games ~ Hockey

Well done to Jenna-Leigh Pietrzak and Alice Colaiacomo for representing Bexley at the London Youth Games Hockey on 2nd July. A successful day achieving a well-deserved bronze. 3rd out of 33 boroughs losing on penalties.

Very emotional day as you can imagine.  Fab work ladies!

GCSE Climbing Course

Our GCSE PE students spent three days completing their climbing course at Lower Grange Farm near Maidstone last week.  A huge number of new skills were developed and then perfected in order to be awarded their practical GCSE mark.  The instructors were impressed with their effort and focus over the intense training period.  The last day included a huge amount of climbing and speed tasks, a real physical test.  Well done for supporting each other so well, through encouragement and when belaying.  What a fantastic opportunity for them all!

Greenwich & Bexley Hospice Marathon Update

Well done Dylan!

For the second year in a row I ran the mini marathon for the Greenwich and Bexley Hospice, who gave end of life support to my dad. This year was very special due to it being the 10th anniversary of the marathon. I ran it with my friend who also ran with me last year and who was running for his Nan.

My family came to watch and I raised over £1000 for the charity, whilst also beating my time in just under 20 minutes. There were big crowds and lots of excited people, and to top it off the weather made for perfect running conditions. Overall it was a wonderful day and I encourage other people to take part next year.

Native speakers of Italian…

We are looking for members of our school community, who are native speakers of Italian who would like to join our amazing team of Modern Foreign Language teachers in September 2023 to maximise the exposure our sixth form students have to authentic conversation in their chosen language of study.

The Language team would organise a schedule around your availability, which would allow for small workshops and conversation classes of 2–5 students. We are looking for native speakers who could ask students questions and support them to articulate and develop their responses accurately. Our Language teachers would support you with the planning of the workshops and topics for discussion. Topics of interest include: Identity, Traditions, Tourism, Food, Culture, School Systems, Equality and The Environment.

If you would like to know more, please contact symons_m@bexleygs.co.uk. We would welcome the chance to include our wider community in our mission to continue to provide an outstanding curriculum.
