Young Enterprise students visit the RAC Club

On Thursday 22nd June, students from Tug of Paw, our Young Enterprise Company Programme team, were invited to a celebration event at the RAC Club at Pall Mall. Once the necessary photographs were taken with the Sauber Mercedes in the lobby, students proceeded to the event room where they were able to meet with Young Enterprise board members, link teachers and members of the Sidcup Rotary Club. In his speech, the Chairman of the East London Board of Young Enterprise congratulated the students on their hard work, creativity and well deserved successes over the year. This was a wonderful way to sign off on what has been a very successful year of learning business for these Year 12 students.

Geography News

Geography taking learning to the field.

In the last 2 weeks the Geography department has taken the Year 12 IB students and the Year 10 GSCE students out of the classroom to carry out fieldwork. It has been a busy but hugely rewarding time.

Year 12: Residential weekend at Juniper Hall, Surrey.

37 Year 12 students along with 3 fabulous Geography teachers left BGS on a sunny Friday morning to travel to the field studies centre, Juniper Hall, in Surrey. On arrival, we hiked up the infamous Box Hill, arriving to take in the stunning view from the top.

This was so impressive that several students also took a night hike to watch the sunset. From Friday afternoon onwards it was all about the River Tillingbourne. Students have collected a wide range of primary data from a number of sites along the course of the river. This saw students pull on their wellingtons and get into the river for an action packed day.

Data collection included: river width, depth and velocity. Once back at the centre and after a slice of delicious banana cake all students set about analysis of the data. This saw students create their own GIS writing up sections of their final Geography IA which is a key component of their final grade.  Many were sad to leave, but quickly fell asleep on the coach on the way home.

Year 10 GCSE Geography Field Trips

Year 10 recently had two Geography fieldwork trips, one to Epping Forest (in north-east London) on the 14th June and another to East Village and the Olympic Park on the 15th June. For the first trip we were studying how the characteristics of a river (its width, how fast the water flows, the depth, etc.) change going from the upper course to the lower course. The trip itself was fun and the weather was nice without being too hot. We travelled to the sites by coach, studying the river in 3 places in our geography groups. My favourite part of the day was collecting data from all sites along the river. On the 15th June, we all met at the Woolwich Arsenal DLR station, taking the DLR to East Village together where we would be examining how sustainable the Stratford regeneration is. At East Village we walked constantly (except during our lunchtime), visiting and studying all areas which were regenerated, we learned loads about the sites we visited and managed to interview locals on what they think of the regeneration. We also drew some field sketches which was the bit I enjoyed most. Overall, these 2 days were a great fun and an educational experience important for our Geography GCSE.

Arthur Chikovsky, Year 10

The second day of our fieldwork started with us all meeting at Woolwich Arsenal DLR Station, where we got on the DLR to Stratford International. Our field studies tutor Dan met us there, and we headed over to East Village, in order to start conducting our sustainability fieldwork. We had to complete many different tasks such as service tallies, environmental surveys and much more. It was so much fun walking around East Village as we got to see many cool things. My favourite part of the day was when we went to Olympic Park and drew some field sketches, and discovered juicy facts about the London 2012 Olympics. We then conducted some questionnaires with the public (which was so much fun) and then got back on the DLR to finish off our fieldwork trips!

East Village, Stratford, London

The second day started with all the students meeting at Woolwich DLR to travel to Stratford, where we met our FSC tutors once again. This fieldwork day was all about urban sustainability and saw students carrying a walking tour of the East village where they conducted a range of primary data collection. This included a service tally, field sketches and EQS surveys. Once again we were impressed with all of their efforts as it was a very hot day in the city. All the groups then moved into the Olympic park to enjoy lunch in the shade and see the Olympic rings! A real highlight for many. No fieldwork experience can be complete without the opportunity to ask questionnaires. Again our Geography students not only impressed their FCS tutors but also the members of the public that they spoke to.

Back in school we are now learning about our data, the results and methods as this knowledge and the skills that all students have learned over these two field work days are assessed in their unit 3 GCSE examination that will take place next summer.

Greenwich & Bexley Hospice Marathon Update

Well done Dylan!

For the second year in a row I ran the mini marathon for the Greenwich and Bexley Hospice, who gave end of life support to my dad. This year was very special due to it being the 10th anniversary of the marathon. I ran it with my friend who also ran with me last year and who was running for his Nan.

My family came to watch and I raised over £1000 for the charity, whilst also beating my time in just under 20 minutes. There were big crowds and lots of excited people, and to top it off the weather made for perfect running conditions. Overall it was a wonderful day and I encourage other people to take part next year.

Safeguarding Update

Dear Parents/Carers,

You will no doubt be aware of the many discussions taking place around Artificial Intelligence. One area of AI which has seen rapid increased popularity is that of chatbots and AI friends, which are available on many platforms, such as Snapchat. As ever, it is vital that we know what our young people are experiencing when using such technology, and that we are active in talking to them about it.

National Online Safety have produced this handy guide for parents to consider what carers and parents need to know about AI Virtual Friends.

Kind regards,

Mr S Auckland, Designated Safeguarding Lead and Deputy Head

Native speakers of Italian…

We are looking for members of our school community, who are native speakers of Italian who would like to join our amazing team of Modern Foreign Language teachers in September 2023 to maximise the exposure our sixth form students have to authentic conversation in their chosen language of study.

We are looking for native speakers who could ask students questions and support them to articulate and develop their responses accurately. Our Language teachers would support you with the planning of the workshops and topics for discussion. Topics of interest include: Identity, Traditions, Tourism, Food, Culture, School Systems, Equality and The Environment.
