Young Enterprise Successes

The 10X Challenge

Last term saw Year 10 Business Studies students participate in the 10X Challenge by Young Enterprise. Students arranged themselves into groups and were loaned £10 from the school. They had four weeks to run their businesses and the results have been phenomenal!

Students were able to put theory into practice and source the best (or cheapest) suppliers, conduct market research, develop their sales skills, improve their customer service and fine tune their finance skills. The businesses included services such as car washing while products included jewellery, keyrings, computer screens and craft kits - just some of the many logos can be seen here. It certainly created a buzz in the year group!

After students repaid their £10 loans (£180 in total, with 18 groups), the total profits made were £2078.43!

Well done to all who participated, you should be very proud of yourselves!

Young Enterprise Team ~ Tug of Paw

Five representatives from this year's Young Enterprise team, Tug of Paw, competed against other school teams in the London & Kent Finals of the Company Programme competition on Wednesday 16th May. Students travelled to the Coram Campus in London where they showcased their company. Having been successful in the first two rounds, students were well rehearsed with what they needed to do and proceeded to set up their trade stand, answer gruelling questions at their two interviews and overcome nerves to deliver their presentation. Again, they were the last to present but provided some very strong competition to the outstanding performances that preceded them. This time the whole team and even members of the audience danced along to the sounds of “who let the dogs out” playing as background music to the video of their dog toys being used by their canine consumers. Sadly the team didn’t make it through to the UK Finals, but they did manage to scoop the award for Best Marketing! This is a fantastic achievement, certainly at this stage of the competition.

The team were commended on their product and that it aims to reduce the impact of climate change by making dog toys from discarded clothing. The judges were impressed with their business acumen and knowledge of their target market. I am immensely proud of the progress that all the Young Enterprise students have made - not just in the competition, but on a personal level. These are skills that the students will benefit from for life.

Well done to the representing students; Daniel Austin, Spencer Cox, Aisha Jokomba, Isabel Lilley and Mason Mckenna for their exceptional performances. They represent a large team who are also responsible for the success of the business.

WINNERS - Year 8 Bexley Borough Rounders

5 out of 5 wins in a tense last game thriller to lead BGS to victory. An action packed afternoon full of girls’ fixtures and training on the school field. Lovely to see so many outside enjoying their sport.

Fantastic teamwork and brilliant catching resulted in the well-deserved win for the girls on Tuesday 23rd May to end the term. They showed total commitment to the game before sprinting off to join their diploma evening. Well done ladies on your superb striking and fielding skills. Next tournament after half-term. Let's see if we can get the double!

Cricket

Well done to the Year 10 cricketers who cruised to a 61 run victory over Wilmington Grammar School. A nice 49 from Matt and 31* for Ben saw us to an impressive 145 for 3 from our 20 overs. Wickets from Ammar (3), Matt (2), Alex and Dev finished the Wilmington innings for 84. A good result for our first league game.

The Year 7 cricket team picked up their first win of the season with an excellent all-round display in the league against Wilmington. The keys to victory were straight death bowling in the final 4 overs, and excellent fielding throughout.

What a win! Ethan’s 55 not out (and a couple of wickets) helped lead BGS to a 10 wicket win over Chis & Sid in the Kent shield this afternoon. Tight bowling, including a brilliant 4 wickets from Medhansh, restricted C&S to 107. Ethan and Atharva (35*) knocked off that total in just 13 overs. A brilliant result boys!

Native speakers of French, German, Italian or Spanish…

We are looking for members of our school community, who are native speakers of French, German, Italian, Spanish who would like to join our amazing team of Modern Foreign Language teachers in September 2023 to maximise the exposure our sixth form students have to authentic conversation in their chosen language of study.

The Language team would organise a schedule around your availability, which would allow for small workshops and conversation classes of 2–5 students. We are looking for native speakers who could ask students questions and support them to articulate and develop their responses accurately. Our Language teachers would support you with the planning of the workshops and topics for discussion. Topics of interest include: Identity, Traditions, Tourism, Food, Culture, School Systems, Equality and The Environment.

If you would like to know more, please contact symons_m@bexleygs.co.uk. We would welcome the chance to include our wider community in our mission to continue to provide an outstanding curriculum.
