Classical Civilisation

Many modern literary texts (as well as other aspects of society) derive directly from ancient literature.  A good knowledge of this literature is invaluable to any student of English, Theatre Studies or indeed History. This A level will appeal to anyone who has enjoyed the Roman Life section of the Latin course or taken Classical Civilisation at GCSE although please note that this is NOT a pre-requisite – most people who choose this A Level have not already done the GCSE.

From September 2000 Classical Civilisation has been offered as an Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level and has been a popular course with beginners and previous students of Latin alike.  Previous study of this subject is not required.  The Sixth Form work is largely focused on literature in translation + primary sources, set in its social, political, historical and/or literary context.

From September 2006 we have offered this as a full A-level in response to students’ interest as well as a broadening of the A-level provision.

Four units are taken from varying authors and  cultural topics studied from literature of Greek or Roman society.  Texts are studied for their style and content but also within their respective contexts.  Modules on offer in the past have included Greek Epic (Homer’s Odyssey ~ the earliest and greatest work of Western literature!), Greek Tragedy (Drama), Art and Architecture and Roman Society + Thought and City Life in Roman Italy.

An interest in both literature and in the ancient world is therefore essential for this course. Visits to dramatic productions and conferences are incorporated where possible.

In all study, work set will include reading ahead and preparing texts for lessons, essays and seminar work; we incorporate healthy debate wherever possible!

This subject combines well with Latin, English or Theatre Studies but none of these is a prerequisite.  We find it appeals to a range of students studying an even greater range of subjects. It provides training in essay writing, debate, textual analysis and research skills.
