Music

Candidates can opt to take the subject at Standard Level or Higher Level.  The standard of work undertaken at both levels is comparable to the A-level but more time will be spent on the subject if studied at Higher Level and a higher standard will be expected of the student, particularly in performance.  The music studied will be very varied ~ the bulk will come from the Western Classical tradition, but a range of world music, jazz and popular styles will also form part of the course.

This course is open to all students who are around grade 5 standard or above on an instrument or in singing, and students should note they will be expected to progress to something approximating Grade 6 standard during the course.  Students do have to have studied GCSE Music.

Structure
Students who opt for Music at either level will study Musical perception and analysis which forms 50% of their music course.  This consists of a study of a prescribed work, study of musical genres and styles and a musical investigation.

Of these three areas only one has a prescribed course by the IBO, the others will be tailored as much as possible to suit the students.

Standard Level
Students who opt for Music at Standard Level will then choose one of the following options:

Solo Performance
Preparation and performance of one or more solo recitals

Composition
Two compositions

Higher Level
Pupils who opt for Music at Higher Level will study the following:

Composition

Three contrasting compositions

Solo Performance

Preparation and performance of one or more recitals (lasting 20 minutes approximately)
