Welcome to the Mathematics Department at Bexley Grammar School.
The department is proud to boast a team of ten fully qualified teachers all with degrees in mathematics or a maths related subject. The majority of teaching takes place in specialist classrooms, each equipped with state of the art interactive whiteboards. The department is well resourced with all students having access to text books, schemes of work and all department resources via Google Classrooms.
In Year 7 students are taught mathematics as a form unit during the first half term and are then set according to ability for the remainder of the key stage. They have seven fifty-minute lessons per fortnight. The scheme of work is based upon the "New National Framework for Mathematics" series by K M Vickers and is underpinned by the Key Objectives in the National Framework for Teaching Mathematics. Throughout the key stage, students study all the main areas of mathematics, (number, algebra, shape and space and data handling), with the emphasis being on using and applying mathematics to solve problems. We believe that continuity of teaching is of great value and, wherever possible, students will be taught by the same teacher throughout the key stage.
In Years 9 students have seven minute lessons per fortnight, increasing to 8 lessons per fortnight in years 10 and 11, and are set according to ability. Students follow the Edexcel linear specification 1MA1 which does not have a coursework component. All students currently follow the higher level course. The emphasis in Key Stage 4, as in Key Stage 3, is on using and applying mathematics to solve problems.
The department offers the following IB courses in the Sixth Form:
- IB Higher Level
- IB Standard Level
- IB Mathematical Studies Standard Level
Extensive use of a graphical calculator is made in all Sixth Form mathematics courses and consequently all students are required to have their own graphical calculator. (Casio FX9750GⅡ)
