Bexley Grammar School’s First German Christmas Market

2009 saw the first ever German Christmas market at Bexley Grammar School. In lessons, Year 7 & 8 Germanists learnt all about a typically German Christmas and found out about German Christmas markets. Pupils wrote practice letters to the Weihnachtsmann to say what they wanted for Christmas. Pupils also went through recipes for German Christmas biscuits, in German, and made biscuits for their homework. Many of the Year 7 & 8s helped prepare art and craft items for sale at the market and, thanks to the help of Mrs Young and the Food Technology Department, they were able to make warm fruit punch, ready for the market café. Sixth-form Germanists prepared the script for the market puppet show.

On the day pupils went through passport control where their passports were checked by Sixth Form Germanists who asked them questions about themselves. Pupils were then able to sample fruit punch, chocolate and fruit kebabs and biscuits at the café and buy Christmas decorations and gifts. The proceeds of the biscuit sale raised money for the Demelza Children’s hospice. Having written their letter to Father Christmas in German, pupils enjoyed the Sixth Form puppet show of ‘Goldlöckchen und die drei Bären’.

Thank you to all staff and pupils whose hard work made the Christmas market possible.

Hopefully our modest Christmas market will inspire pupils to go to Germany themselves one day and sample the delights of a real Christmas market.

Frohe Weihnachten und einen guten Rutsch ins Neujahr
