Welcome to the Science Department at Bexley Grammar School.
Scientific exploration has formed and continues to shape the way in which we view the world. Identifying the underpinning principles of the biological, chemical and physical world has allowed humans to invent and create technologies that have changed the face of the planet. The modern world is increasingly technologically complex and thus the need for sound understanding of such principles has never been in more demand. At Bexley Grammar School we aim to equip the citizens of the future with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions and the scientists of the future with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to contribute to the advancement and benefit of humanity.
Bexley Grammar School offers a wide range of science courses to pupils of all ages. Science College Status enables the school to foster strong links with universities and industry and to thoroughly equip the department with cutting edge technology and resources.
All Science lessons take place in modern scientific laboratories equipped with interactive whiteboards. Pupils are frequently able to access the numerous pieces of networked science software during science lessons and data-logging demonstrations are used frequently to investigate the concepts introduced during the courses. Pupils regularly develop their scientific enquiry skills through the completion of practical tasks in small groups.
KS3
The Year 7 intake follows a two-year KS3 science course. On entry to Bexley Grammar School, Year 7 students learn about the importance of laboratory safety, and the skills, and techniques used in practical activities.
The KS3 Science syllabus is supported by the Hodder science scheme and includes topics such as:
Our pupils are encouraged, and guided to develop independent learning skills, and study skills, so vital for future academic study. They are also asked to identify strengths and weaknesses in relation to their learning, which in turn enables them to develop these all important skills.
In KS3 visits are offered to the Science and Natural History museums, and to the south coast to investigate the abundance of organisms on the rocky shore.
A number of opportunities for Gifted and Talented pupils exist, which include video conferencing with the National Portrait gallery on the work of Edward Jenner and Lady Wortley Montague, London Gifted and talented conferences; 'Diagnose and Treat', and 'Manage an Ecosystem'.
