Mathematics

Welcome to the Mathematics Department at Bexley Grammar School.

The department is proud to boast a team of ten fully qualified teachers all with degrees in mathematics or a maths related subject. The majority of teaching takes place in specialist classrooms, each equipped with state of the art interactive whiteboards. The department is well resourced with all students having their own text book.

KS3

In Year 7 students are taught mathematics as a form unit during the first half term and are then set according to ability for the remainder of the key stage. They have seven fifty minute lessons per fortnight. The scheme of work is based upon the "New National Framework for Mathematics" series by K M Vickers and is underpinned by the Key Objectives in the National Framework for Teaching Mathematics. Throughout the key stage, students study all the main areas of mathematics, (number, algebra, shape and space and data handling), with the emphasis being on using and applying mathematics to solve problems. It is believed that continuity of teaching is of great value and, wherever possible, students will be taught by the same teacher throughout the key stage.
In Year 7 the majority of work is level 6 and in Year 8 it is level 7, with the most able going on to study level 8. At the end of Year 8 students take their SATs with about half taking the 6-8 tier and half taking the 5-7 tier.

KS 4

In Years 9-11 students have three fifty minute lessons per week and are set according to ability. Students follow the Edexcel linear specification 1380 which will have no coursework as from the first examination in June 2009. All students follow the higher level course, with the most able taking their GCSE in November of Year 11. These students will go on to study additional mathematics and take the free standing mathematics qualification in additional mathematics at the end of Year 11. This is very good preparation for students wishing to study mathematics in the Sixth Form.

Sixth Form

The department offers the following courses in the Sixth Form:

  • OCR A-Level Mathematics (modules C1, C2, C3, C4, S1, M1)
  • OCR A-Level Further Mathematics (Modules FP1, FP2, FP3, D1, S2, M2)
  • IB Higher Level
  • IB Standard Level
  • IB Mathematical Studies Standard Level

Extensive use of a graphical calculator is made in all Sixth Form mathematics courses and consequently all students are required to have their own graphical calculator. (Casio CFX9850G-PLUS)
